Catholic Missal Apps
Browse the very best Roman Catholic Missal apps. All the apps we recommend are in English but some of them offer other language options including Latin and Spanish. We list apps for both the Ordinary Form of the Roman Catholic Mass and the Extraordinary Form (Latin 1962). Apps which include the English Ordinary Form contain the updated English translation of the Roman Missal (3rd ed.) Yes, you may use these apps on your mobile device during Mass. They were designed for that. [Read our guidelines for using a cell phone in church.] Some of these apps include versions of the Mass texts for priests to use on the altar. Some apps only offer responses (in case that cheat sheet card in the pew is missing). Links to the most popular Catholic devotional booklets centered on daily Scripture readings at Mass (in digital format) are included in our list. These too cover both Ordinary and Extraordinary Form of the Roman Missal.

Liturgy of the Hours Apps – Roman Breviary
Praying the Liturgy of the Hours (Divine Office) is great way to enhance your prayer life. This is the daily prayer of the Church, marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with prayer. The Hours are a meditative dialogue on the mystery of Christ, using scripture and prayer [USCCB web site]. Whether you pray this regularly already or are just starting out, these apps offer the prayers for the hours during the day plus the Office of Readings. The benefit to having it on your mobile device over reading from the traditional printed breviary? It’s at your fingertips wherever you are. The backlight and ability to zoom text allows for easier reading. No page flipping ribbon setting or figuring out the correct segments for the day as it is all laid out for you. Some apps offer audio versions as well so you can pray when you are on the go or in a circumstance where you cannot read from text. x

Need a quick look at the liturgical calendar on line? Here it is. We recommend the very best in Catholic liturgical calendars for a variety of formats including your home computer. Bible Apps Sacred Scripture
At a Sunday Angelus during Lent in 2014, Pope Francis endorsed the idea of reading the Bible on your mobile device!
“During the last few Sundays I have suggested to all of you to obtain a small copy of the Gospel, to carry with you during the day, so you can read it frequently…Today we can also read the Gospel using many technological instruments. You can carry the entire Bible around with you in a smartphone, in a tablet. The important thing is to read the Word of God, by any means – read the Word of God, it is Jesus who is speaking to you!” Our top Bible picks are available in a variety of digital formats in a variety of versions including Catholic, of course. Many are free. The top Bible study apps with a host of resources are listed as well. Click the link above to get started.
Confession Apps Sacrament of Reconciliation
Apps of this nature are NOT meant to be a substitute for sacramental confession with a priest.
The sacrament requires a good effort at an examination of conscience. The apps selected offer a variety of creative means of exploring yourself, your relationship with God and the various ways we rupture that from time to time. Yes, you can bring your mobile device into the confessional if it will help you to make a good confession. Go for it.
Fr. Barron comments on the use of Confession apps.

Prayer Apps
“Mental prayer in my opinion is nothing else than an intimate sharing between friends; it means taking time frequently to be alone with Him who we know loves us.” St. Teresa of Avila
From simple to sophisticated, a variety of prayer apps are available for most mobile devices. These apps include traditional Catholic prayers, rosaries, blessings, novenas, Way of the Cross, prayers for various occasions, Psalms, Marian prayers, Catholic devotions, retreats and intercessory prayer for various saints. There is even an app which tracks your personal prayer intentions and another that sends your prayer requests to a Catholic priest. Some of the apps include audio versions of prayers. St. Therese of Lisieux kept her crucifix tucked within her habit (photo on left; it was the size of an iPhone 4). Today we tuck our mobile devices in our clothes. Okay, a large crucifix would be better, but let’s at least transform those devices into tools to deepen our prayer life and help us connect with the Lord. Click link above to begin your search for the prayer app right for you. x x

eBooks
“The purpose of our lives as Catholics is to become saints. By God’s grace, we can collaborate with Him on that lifelong task. You know many of the ways already, and an indispensable one is spiritual reading, which is accessible to all who are literate.” – Father C. John McCloskey. Thousands of e-book titles are available to read off your mobile device. Many of those titles are free, and you don’t need an expensive e-reader as your cell phone probably has all you need to download and start reading. Most services out there require reading software, but we also offer one that just needs standard Java (which most phones have). Catholic Political Action Apps (United States)
By our baptism, Catholics are committed to following Jesus Christ and to be “salt for the earth, light for the nations.” As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, “It is necessary that all participate, according to his position and role, in promoting the common good. This is inherent in the dignity of the human person … As far as possible citizens should take an active part in public life” [USCCB Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship.] We feature two popular apps that are designed to help U. S. Catholics become more informed and involved in their attention to national civic matters.
Social Networking
Ignio (Free) iOS and Android– Live, share, track your spiritual practices and thoughts–just as you would your diet and exercise program only it’s for your soul. Collect a group of 11 friends to share updates, thoughts and practices like prayer, scripture reading, mass attendance. Great app for those who enjoy using social networking to keep in contact with certain close spiritual friends. On that front, it’s a good means of spiritual support with others you trust. It has a bishop’s approval. I like apps containing personal information like this with additional password protection–this has it. However, you have to sign up for a log-in. I am not a fan of having to give personal info like email address and my birthdate just to open the app. I do enjoy the daily message of reflection which automatically appears on my phone each morning.
Advent Apps
Prepare for Christmas with little Advent devotions on-the-go. The popular apps recommended provide daily devotions, Scripture readings, Advent calendars and prayer services. Some apps contain virtual Advent wreaths with candles that you can light on your device to bring this devotion with you wherever you travel. x x

Lenten Apps
Many Catholic apps include in their content various Lenten devotions like Way of the Cross. So, you may have these devotions for Lent already. Check the detailed contents of your apps. Some apps are exclusively devoted to Lenten devotions. Click the link above to browse those apps that are popularly recommended. Browse a variety of resources to help you in your Lenten journey.

Thanks for throwing light on the various types of catholic apps available in the mobile app space. I am going to add some of these Catholic apps to my mobile. These apps are a good way for me to deepen my faith and strengthen my religious beliefs. http://www.onseeker.com/cathoic-apps.html
Hi Jenny,
I’m Carlo Giorgi, I’m an italian journalist and I work for the Custody of the Holy Land (www.terrasanta.net). I would like to draw your attention to an interesting dossier on the Holy Family of Nazareth, published in the latest issue of The Holy Land Review, available on the App Store. It explains well the time and environment in which mary, Joseph and Jesus lived, worked, and prayed.
The same issue also contains the results of the first scientific research on the olive trees of the Garden of Gethsemane, and an interview with the Syrian Catholic Patriarch, Ignace Youssif III Younan.
Good reading,
Carlo Giorgi
Too bad you folks can’t or wont come up wth a free version of the Lit of the Hours for the Android system. Does I-phone equate to Roman Catholic?
Try iBreviary or Laudete apps which are free and include a Liturgy of the Hours. Both apps have Android platform.
I am looking for a Franciscan supplement to the Liturgy of the Hours for my laptop and iPhone. Do you have it?
iBreviary contains optional texts for 4 religious orders. Franciscans are one of them! iBreviary is FREE. So you should be all set.
iBreviary (Free) has text options for 4 different religious orders. Franciscan is one of them! In settings, just turn on the Franciscan option.
Hello, thanks for including our apps. Wanted to let you know that MP3 Cardinal Newman (like all of our apps) is available for Android as well as ios.
“Mea Culpa” is the most detailed (not for the scrupulous) and is the only one that actually badges sins by by number, species, kind. One down side, they don’t actually display under the same commandment in confession mode. Not that big of a deal. The other confession apps are just ‘yes/ no’. Number not included. Strongly advise UNLESS you suffer from scrupulosity, or are of the more ‘progressive’ bent. You’ll just get aggravated and likely not use it anyway.
You need apps for nook not just the kindle!!!!!!! ( catholics apps)
Is there no app for the Enchiridion of Indulgences? Any idea if one is in the making?
Request for iMissal for BlackBerry Z10.
Thanks.
A new Catholic app just came out recently. It is called “Wake Up to the Creed.” It is an alarm clock that wakes you up with an audio of the Nicene Creed. It is available in several languages! Pray the solemn Profession of Faith before you even get out of bed in the morning.
I’ll like to a new app to this list, but it isn’t clear to me how to do it. It’s called “Saint of the Day for Kids” It is available for iOS. It is a great resource for parents teaching their kids about the Saints. The images are printable, and sharable.
Thank your for including the English-Latin “Roman Missal” app from our firm, Alpha Opensource. We’re striving to make it the best and most comprehensive English-Latin Roman Catholic Missal app. We released a new version yesterday, dedicated to Pope Francis. 🙂 The app now has a treasury of traditional Christian prayers in English and latin.
Such a lack of support for Windows Phone… such a shame. Come on Universalis!

I’m looking for iPhone apps that feature Scriptural Study tools like maps, glossaries, Dictionary of the Bible, Bible Timelines, etc. Any ideas?
Olive Tree’s Bible Study App
http://www.olivetree.com/bible-study-apps/
At that page click “Bible Study Tools” in upper menu
From there you can choose various tools for your use. Very good material for use with Bible Study App. You’ll be amazed. Good luck!
I wish you have Divine Office in Spanish. I would like to buy it.
Have you heard of Verbum? You might want to check it out—it has a ton free books, bibles and commentaries.
We’ve highlighted this phenomenal app on our web site. Check it out!
Pleas add this android aps to the prayer. This aps contains 260 roman catholic prayers. Thanks. Good bles you.
Yes add all available free apps. Thank you
Thank you
Thanks you sooooooooooooo much for this blog. I am a convert and my Catholic son-in-law had been listening to a Protestant app. He asked me if I knew of any good Catholic apps b/c he thinks he should listen to them instead. I asked several young adults but none of them knew about all these apps. God Bless YOU!
Thank you for the feedback. This site was originally developed as a resource for clergy and seminarian friends of mine who were either asking me for app recommendations or giving me app recommendations. This became a clearing house for all of us to share app ideas and links, and it remains so to this day. I’m so glad you found this easy one-stop resource for Catholic apps!
Wonderful ressource, I too enjoy sharing my findings with catholic friends:There is an app-book called Compendium (compendium of the catechism in several languages) on iTunes, there is the possibility of buying GIA hymnals on ipad- the app is Hymnals. ALso I know it is not specificially catholic but there are several kids apps on bible stories and games as well (Bible time, Noah’s ark etc.)
Recomendation for best Catholic Daily Devotional App?
Thanks for your good question. Laudete has daily devotions and saint of the day included in its many offerings. If you’re looking for something with more weight, try iBreviary or Divine Office to pray the Liturgy of the Hours. The rosary is also always an exceptional devotional aid. Lots of those to choose from in app format. Hope that helps!
Thank you. I will research them all and find what fits my needs.
I forgot to mention the most popular daily devotional published in print form–Magnificat. It is available as an app but only in iOS format and at a small price. https://www.magnificat.net/english/iphoneweb.asp
Thanks for great app . I hav grown spiritualy. God bless u all and His wisdom to win more souls to jesus. Amen.
Catholic is no doubt the one and the only Universal Church. I look forward to visiting St Peters Basilica one day. God is with us
Big fan of the Laudate App. All of these apps are great. Thanks for sharing. My focus with apps is more personal within the community. I help Catholic parishes, schools and ministries reach and communicate easily with their community who are constantly on the go by developing their very own mobile app. So far the response has been great! I kindly ask for your feedback on what I am doing and looking to connect with Catholics who have a passion for the church and new media.
