99 years ago–first apparition of Our Lady of Fatima

We are one year away from a giant centennial celebration of a famous, Church-authenticated Marian apparition. Ninety-nine years ago, Our Lady of Fatima appeared to three shepherd children in Portugal to proclaim a message of prayer and penance for the conversion of sinners and a promise of world peace. Since the first apparition on May 13, 1917, many have followed Our Lady’s requests and have even traveled on pilgrimage to Fatima, Portugal. In preparation for the 100th anniversary of the apparitions,  Vatican Radio  [Free mobile app- AppleAndroidWindows Phone] recently featured a special radio report on one famous pilgrim– Saint Pope John Paul II–and his personal connection to Our Lady of Fatima.  In this report, listeners are treated to audio of one of the visionaries, Lucia, as well as Saint John Paul II as he beatified the other two visionaries. Very cool stuff.

If you are unfamiliar with the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, here’s a short video detailing the spectacular events 99 years ago.
